Unlike a lot of music in the mainstream at this time, especially since digital music technology was still so new - you don’t see the instruments speak to each other like they do here. I see shadow puppets, a court jester, a priest, a pauper, the lover and the emotionally barricaded. To me this track’s elements speak with each other like a classic drama. Alone they may be hollow, recognizable sounds of an era. It takes a talented writer to craft a story that brings new dimensions to a storied career, a talented set designer to craft a convincing new environment. You can hear the equivalent of Michael staying in after hours, molding the space with his hands, fed by the rush of manifestation. It’s an immense privilege we have that he took this effort to show us what was in his mind, how forward thinking and original an artist can be with a familiar color palette- how unfamiliar we may have been with its capabilities in the first place. Like stepping inside the back room of the daycare center you weren’t allowed into as a kid, painting the part of the wall underneath the hung photos.
